Thats an amazing thought. and rightly I also believe privacy might be the 'raging trend' five years down the line. One thought which comes to my mind is the 'user' getting the fee for the information. You can have multi-levels of information, the hi…

Perhaps a way to think about the problem is to use the Canvas to first analyze the "anti-privacy" mode of the way things work today. Pick a customer segment - for example, women who are concerned about stalkers. They use mobile phones, social media,…

Profile Information

Why are you passionate about business models and business model innovation?
As a product designer I have been involved in creating products for a wide range of uses and users. It is not enough to design innovative products in this rapidly changing world. Anyone can copy your products within a very short period of time. Business Models are much harder to replicate with speed and they set the stage for powerful brand expressions whether that be products, services or messages.
How would you best describe your level of expertise when it comes to business models?
knowledgeable
What's your URL?

Who do you work for? What do you do?
I have been designing killer product expressions for Trek Bicycle Corp for the last 8 years. Currently I am the Industrial Design Manager for Pavement and Lifestyle category products providing leadership and processes for our benchmark worthy, cross functional core team.
What industry do you mainly work in (e.g. financial services, telco, utilities, public sector, academia, pharma...)?
Sporting goods.
What is the size of the organization you work for?
1'001-10'000

yep that is my son. He is wonderful. 16 months of trouble! He seems to be a bright little talkative fella.

Yes I work at Trek. I am the industrial design manager for our Pavement/Lifestyle category products. Trek is an amazing company. We operate Trek, Gary Fisher and Bontrager brands spanning just about all products for the cycling industry from bikes to apparel to tools and accessories. We are a global company with development offices in the US, Asia, NL and Germany. Feel free to have your student contact me at chad_lockart@trekbikes.com and I can answer questions she may have as well as put her in touch with our engineering director.

As far as biz model innovation I can’t really talk about specifics at Trek but I can say my team lives at the intersection of value propositions and product/service realization. We (trekID) work in small cross functional core teams and lead people centered innovation processes and brand expressions to define new value for the business. Some time ago a colleague and I started calling what we do “business design.” At the time we didn’t know that phrase would become a career path as it is now (ideo business design teams or Motorola’s consumer design group is now calling themselves bus design unit). Trek has been an amazing entrepreneurial experience.

As far as biz model innovation and my future I plan to take my experiences in product development and people centered value creation to the next level over the next few years. Industrial Design as a practice has changed greatly in the last 5 years moving closer to the highest levels of strategic definition. Business design, the design of systems, services and products is the next frontier. I am pretty excited about it…as you can see by my long response here!

That said you seem to have a wealth of experience in an area of great interest to me. I am curious to hear what you think about business design within the context of the VC world?

Chad - thank you for your invite - your son (i'm assuming that) is just darling! how old is he? i've got one about to officially become a 'teenager' in about 1 month and one that just turned 10 - goes way way too fast.

I see you work for Trek Bikes and do product design - I'd love to chat with you and learn more about what you do - selfishly, I'm mentoring a student at Brown (my alma mater) who is a engineer major and an avid biker - she has biked cross-country for charities. And I'd love to learn what you've experienced with biz model innovation (among others) - I have a fabulous client in Neenah but probably won't be up there til closer to spring (when continental has their direct CLE to Green Bay flights!) - deb
